Chapter fourteen

It had been about three days since the fight, and Van was headed out to meet Liam for coffee. Marcus had agreed to wait in the apartment and give them their time.

They had exchanged a few texts, but Van could tell he was as tentative about it all as she was. She’d had plenty of time to think, and Marcus had convinced her to stop being a dick about it, so she was going to apologize and see how that went.

Van slid into the front seat of her car and as she pulled the door shut, a hand reached out and stopped it from closing.

“Ms. Beaujolais? If you could wait a moment?” the man said as he pushed the door wide and stepped closer so she couldn’t shut it without hitting him. One hand on the door, the other flipped open a badge folder with ‘Investigator’ in bold print and some kind of government seal. She only had a brief moment to examine it before he snapped it shut.

“I’m Agent Bellinger, and we need to talk.”

“I’ve got an appointment, could you maybe come back later?” Van asked.

“No, we need to talk now. Mr. Grant will wait for you. Just text him that you’ll be late,” Agent Bellinger said.

Van felt the bottom drop out of her stomach. This was bad. Really bad. She pulled out her phone and sent Liam a text. I’m running late. Call me in thirty minutes if I’m not there. Then she hit the record button and put the phone in her pocket before she turned in her seat to look at the man.

“Okay, talk.”

“You have a journal you keep on your laptop. You need to delete it immediately, and any backup copies you may have.”

“Excuse me?” Van stared at him. “Who hacked into my laptop? That’s private.”

“That’s irrelevant,” Bellinger said. “You need to delete that journal. The information you have in there is sensitive and having it unsecured is a risk to the security of the United States. Delete it, or we will confiscate the whole laptop and take you into federal custody.”

“Because I’m journaling about my grief and my meetings with my therapist?” Van knew exactly what he was talking about, but she would play dumb and get him to say as much as possible.

“Because you’re writing about a government program that is still primarily classified,” Bellinger said. “Don’t play coy, Ms. Beaujolais. You’re not a stupid person and you know precisely what we’re referring to.”

“Hmm, I didn’t know the CIA was allowed to operate on domestic soil,” Van said with a faint smile.

Bellinger leaned in and his eyes grew hard. “Careful, Evangeline. You don’t want to make enemies of us. Delete the journal, or our next steps won’t be so gentle and understanding.” With that, he backed up a step, turned, and got into the passenger side of the stereotypical black sedan with tinted windows.

The car sat there with the engine running, so Van slid back around, shut her door and locked it
